La barrera del sonido
El muro de aire comprimido que se forma en torno al avión se debe a que las ondas sonoras no puede superar la velocidad del avión.
Cuando el avión supera Match 1 (la velocidad del sonido) el halo de aire se deshace, produciendo el estampido sónico.

for any given temperature and pressure, sound propagates at a finite speed, but you could always move faster in the medium than the speed of signal propagation; it’s like you can kick a ball and run faster than your kick to catch up with it!

the above comments of courser are analogies but the breaking of sound barrier is an interesting phenomena, what is called phase transitions in thermal physics.
